Do I Qualify for Disability?

When Should I Apply?

Deciding if it’s time to apply

It can be hard to decide when to apply for Social Security Disability. Often, people hope to improve and be able to return to work, while other people who are working part time wonder if they are working too much to qualify.

Social Security requires that people be out of work (or reduced to part time hours) for 12 months. However, you can still apply before the 12 months have passed, as long as you EXPECT your disability to last 12 months or more. That means that you don’t need to wait until 12 full months have passed to apply.

For many people, it can be best to apply before 12 full months have passed. Because of the time that an application can take, it is good to get the ball rolling early. Additionally, sometimes waiting longer can mean that it’s harder to get medical records or information from your doctors, which can be very important.
